-Little Lab

At public libraries, Summer Reading Programs are always vibrant and filled with discovery and adventure. One of the standout initiatives this year was a STEAM Preschool Storytime, Little Lab. This program combined the magic of storytelling with hands-on experiments, allowing young children to explore themes like the water cycle and the importance of brushing teeth in an engaging, interactive manner.

Little Lab was designed to ignite curiosity and foster a love for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) from an early age. Each session began with a question that introduced the day's theme. For instance, we might start with the question, "Why rain?" followed by a CLAP and a captivating book about the journey of a water droplet, which led to an experiment, and the children finished that reading time by creating their water cycle art that later was exhibited in the Gallery. This hands-on activity reinforces the concept and provides a memorable, tactile learning experience.

Another theme we explored was the importance of good dental hygiene. After reading a fun, educational story about brushing teeth, the children engaged in an experiment where they observed the effects of different liquids on eggshells, which represented teeth. This visual and interactive approach helped solidify the importance of brushing and caring for their own teeth, making the lesson both practical and memorable.

Our Little Lab sessions were further enriched by special guests from the community. We've had the pleasure of hosting experts from Amazeum, the Arkansas Airplane and Military Museum, and the University of Arkansas College of Engineering. These guests brought additional excitement and expertise, providing demonstrations and activities that captivated our young audience. Their involvement not only enhanced the educational value of the program but also introduced the children to real-world applications of STEAM concepts, inspiring future scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Through Little Lab, we aim to create a dynamic learning environment where preschoolers can explore, experiment, and, most importantly, have fun. The positive feedback from parents and the children's enthusiastic participation are testaments to this program's success. As we look forward to future sessions, we remain committed to nurturing the curious minds of our youngest learners and sparking a lifelong interest in STEAM.
